Oh, jammed valves… how I love thee. Not!

I dropped a metal pot lid just right such that it caused my sprinkler system to go into SPRAY ALL THE THINGS mode right out the back door of the house (including into the house when the door was opened). In attempting to turn off the valve that was RIGHT THERE, I discovered it was jammed.

Whole house off. Cut the pipes around the valve. Replace valve. Whole house on. THEN worry about the damned sprinkler.

Trick: Every 6 months or so, turn off the valve and turn it back on. More frequently if you have heavily mineralized water. At the least, this'll shake loose buildup around the mechanical bits and prolong the life of the valve (though, likely, you'll still get enough buildup over time that it won't fully close -- there'll be a bit of a likely manageable drip).

The joys of home ownership.
