Today was a bit of a slow day. Read a book, took a couple walks with Meine Schwester and Coco. Played Mancala. Made dinner. Now I’m going to pack for my trip home. Hope you all had a good start to your year.

Coco and I went for a run today after the girls and I got back from DC. It wasn’t anything fantastic, but I’m feeling better after being such a sloth the last few days. You can see where she stopped to pee and poo. Still doesn’t make up for everything I’ve been eating. Need to do it more consistently.
Seems that on the whole other side of the country, today was Coco’s bad day at the dog park. Meine Schwester and Coco were throwing the ball when another dog interfered. That is fine because Coco just leaves the toy until the Mean Dog is done playing with it. She was waiting patiently. The Mean Dog left the toy. Coco took it and the Mean Dog turned around and attacked her. Just to top it off, Mean Dog’s Friend joined in too. After getting the phone number of the emergency vet from some people, Meine Schwester left–but Mean Dog and Mean Dog’s Friend’s owner stayed!
Meine Schwester and Coco found a vet that she really likes. The Vet said that the advice she got in the park of using superglue was pretty horrible. Supposedly the owner who suggested this shows their dog. I just watched “Best in Show” last night and recommended that she watch it to see how reliable that information was. ;-)
She told the vet how the other dogs’ owner had told her that maybe Coco had bitten herself since the bite was on her mouth. That was also a ridiculously untrue statement to attempt to deflect blame. The Vet and The Receptionist asked what the dogs looked like and which park. Come to find out, The Receptionist’s dog had also been attacked by the same dogs and these dogs use this same vet!
About $85 later–much less than Perl’s bill, but less severe injuries as well–Coco was told she would be fine and to just keep the wound clean and wait for it to heal. Perl wishes her a quick recovery!
Perl spent last evening at the emergency clinic. Seems she and the dog next door decided to get into a spat. One minute they were playing, the next we were tearing them apart. It can’t be blamed on either dog, or is blamed on both. I think maybe the other dog was talking trash about Coco leaving.
I suspect that Perl got some good bites in, but so did the other dog. Perl got a couple of puncture wounds in her leg as well as one that tore the skin off the bone a little. That one now has a drain. Then she ripped up one of the pads on her paw pretty well. Both of those have stitches and her paw is wrapped in a bandage. Now she looks miserable and is in some pain, but she will be fine.
I now understand better how hard it is for parents to let their kids go off to college. Meine Schwester left this morning to move back to the east coast. She and Coco have been living with me for just shy of a year now and I’m really going to miss having them around. It has almost felt like going through a divorce. I really didn’t want to separate the kids, but there was no way that either of us could have left our dogs. So now I have to deal with Perl whining, searching desperately and staring at the door waiting for Coco to come home.
Many of my best memories over the years have to do with meine Schwester. She and I have been to Germany and Switzerland, Disney for the Millenium, Christmases in Hawaii, and a Thanksgiving in Las Vegas. When I lived in Cali the first time, she was just an hour away. This time, she moved in with me the day after I got here. Part of what made it easy to live so far away from my family, was knowing that she was here too. Especially after September 11th when neither of us could go home.
Sure, we’ve gotten on each other’s nerves while living together, but one of the best things about having my sister as a roommate is that we can yell at each other all we want, but we are still sisters. And we’ve had our fair share of fights about stupid things, but for the most part, we’ve been there for each other. I probably would never have had my ear surgery if she hadn’t been here to take care of me.
So, I’m going to miss having you around. I’m going to miss sharing dog duty, having our dogs tire each other out, Perl teaching Coco bad habits. I’m going to miss going to the dog park, and I’m sorry that I didn’t believe in Fort Funston and the Santa Cruz Dog Beach earlier. (username is my first name, password my middle name, both lowercase) I’m going to miss having dinners of things mom made when we were growing up–we never did make tuna pea wiggle for everyone. I’m going to miss our conversations across the hall while going to sleep.
I’m grateful, however, for having the opportunity to spend this past year with you and really get to know you. I’ve always felt a little bit guilty that I wasn’t around while you were in high school. Seems like you really could have used a big sister then, but I was off doing the college thing. I’m glad that I got to make up for it a little bit this year. And I’m thankful that you were here for me. Moving back out here wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve done. And for as much as you may have needed me, I probably needed you around more. I’m sorry that the four hours you spent in San Diego didn’t work out for you, but I’m glad I paid that guy in the wheelchair in the park to scare you off so that you’d move up here. ;-)
I guess the time has come to move on. Eventually, we need to do our own things, even if we are just pretending to be adults. And just so you know…even things that don’t turn out the way you wanted them to are worth your time, as long as you learned from the experience. We wouldn’t be the people we are today if we hadn’t had the experiences we had. And I couldn’t have asked for a better sister than you.
Viel Glück! Ich liebe meine kleine Schwester!
I know that I’ve said it before, but I love the WB show “Related.” Meine Schwester und ich just watched the season finale in our usual position: squeezed in the loveseat with Coco, Pablo on the arm, Mitsy MIA, and Perl jumping in occasionally. We spend most of the show trying to decide which character we are, or accusing each other of fitting one of the rolls. We also try to figure out how our two sister-in-laws fit in. We are convinced that if we all lived in the same city, our lives would be fodder for the show.
“The boys”, two little Scotties, came to visit today, so “The girls” are tired. The cats are considering coming back out of hiding. It might take a little while though. They should all sleep well tonight.
Today was pumpkin carving day. Well, it was actually car cleaning day, but I managed to fit in carving pumpkins as well. I’ve been cleaning all weekend to make up for the mess that I made last week. So I really don’t have much to write about. Overall, it was a nice relaxing weekend.
So I don’t think that I’m going to be starting a career in pumpkin carving. However, Duarte has a competition every year for their designers. You can vote on your favorite design.
