Baking soda puts out fires

I cleaned out my toaster oven yesterday morning because when I’d toasted a sandwich in it a few days ago, some cheese melted over. I then threw in some waffles. Lego my Eggos! Checked the weather while they were toasting. Came back to the kitchen to see flames inside the toaster oven. May have said quietly, “Oh. Shit.” Considered for a moment what my actions should be. Unplugged the toaster oven. Decided that I needed to save the waffles because I was hungry. Grabbed them with the tongs, but that added oxygen, so the flame grew. Realized that I needed baking soda, so I rummaged through my cupboards and found some. Wondered for a second what would happen if I used baking powder instead of baking soda. Opened the container and the oven door and tossed some in.

Poof! No more fire.

There is still baking soda in the toaster oven today. I want more waffles. Not sure I’m willing to clean it out yet…
