Blinkers signal the end of etiquette

I’ve noticed lately that the percentage of people using their car blinker to signal direction has been declining. The car on the other side of the road sits in the middle of the intersection for no known reason while I wait patiently with my left signal blinking. Cars cut me off turning right through my bike lane without warning. I stand on the corner with Perl until all cars are out of sight because I don’t trust them not to turn unexpectedly into the driveway and run over my dog.

Have people forgotten that blinkers are not for them? Blinkers are for the people around them. What has happened to etiquette and common courtesy?

It isn’t just blinkers, I feel like people are more self-centered than they were when I was growing up. Everything is about me and now. Patience used to be a virtue, now it seems non-existant. What happened to ‘do unto others as you would have done unto yourself’?

I had a great conversation once with a Muslim friend. She explained that women wear head scarves to keep from offending others, whereas the People of Walmart believe that if you are offended you should look away. I believe both views are extreme, but I’d like to find a happy medium.

So I implore you all to add one more New Year’s Resolution to your list: Do something selfless. Hold a door open for a stranger, help an old lady cross the street, or pick up a piece of garbage. Think bigger by cutting back on disposable items or using less fuel to help the environment for your children and grandchildren.

And please, use your blinker.

Someone’s getting old and cynical! ;) Trust me, it always seems that way, from all the generations I’ve had exposure to. As you get older, “kids these days” never respect the world the way you wish they would — whatever the age of the “kids”.

    • I agree I’m getting old and cynical, but it isn’t just the kids I’m complaining about. Adults have become just as self-centered and impolite.

This has always been one of my pet peeves.
